BANGKOK ATTRACTIONS

First off, I have to rave about the hotel we stayed at: Banyan Tree Hotel Bangkok. We were on the 59th floor, and the 180° view of the city’s east side gave us the most stunning sunrise every single morning—definitely a highlight of the stay. The hotel also offers an incredible breakfast buffet in a serene dining hall that overlooks a beautiful garden wall, making it the perfect way to start your day.

But what really makes Banyan Tree stand out is the Vertigo Moon Bar, their rooftop bar with jaw-dropping views of Bangkok’s skyline. We started every night there, soaking in the atmosphere and city lights before heading off into the Bangkok night. From the luxurious rooms to the impeccable service, this hotel is an absolute must whether you're traveling for work, leisure, or a mix of both. It’s the perfect balance of comfort, style, and convenience, making it a fantastic choice for any traveler.

Great! Now on with what Bangkok has to offer.

TEMPLES

Bangkok is filled with countless temples, each unique in its design, history, and significance, but they all share a few key elements. Most feature intricate architecture, with ornate details, golden Buddhas, and vibrant colors. Whether it’s the grandeur of Wat Arun or the serenity of Wat Pho, these temples are not just tourist attractions—they are sacred spaces, deeply rooted in Thai culture and religion.

One thing that all temples in Bangkok have in common is the expectation of respect, especially when it comes to behavior and attire. Visitors must dress modestly—covering shoulders, chest, and knees is essential. Shoes must be removed before entering temple halls, and quiet, respectful behavior is expected throughout your visit. Photography is usually allowed, but it's important to check for signs and avoid disturbing worshippers.

For me, my biggest rule when traveling is to always show respect. I can’t emphasize this enough—respecting the local culture, traditions, and laws are crucial, not only to have a meaningful experience but also to honor the places and people we visit. So, I urge all travelers to take this seriously and show the utmost respect when visiting Bangkok’s temples, or any sacred site around the world.

Wat Pho ***: One of the must-see temples in Bangkok, famous for its massive reclining Buddha statue, colorful spires, and traditional Thai massage school. The reclining Buddha is an impressive 46 meters long and covered in gold leaf, with intricate details like mother-of-pearl inlaid feet. It’s breathtaking and unlike anything you’ve seen before!

Beyond the Buddha, Wat Pho is home to stunning, colorful spires, or "chedis," that are decorated with intricate mosaics and floral designs. The vibrant colors and detailed craftsmanship make the whole temple feel alive and inviting.

Wat Pho is also known for being the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. The temple still operates a massage school where you can book an authentic, relaxing massage from trained professionals—perfect after a long day of exploring Bangkok!

Wat Arun ***: Also known as the Temple of Dawn, Wat Arun is one of the most magical spots in Bangkok. Its towering spires (or "prangs") reach high into the sky, and the intricate tile work that covers the temple is absolutely stunning. The tiles are a mix of colorful porcelain and glass, which shimmer in the sunlight and make the entire temple feel almost otherworldly.

Historically, Wat Arun dates back to the Ayutthaya period, and it’s known for its role in symbolizing the rise of the new dawn for the Thai kingdom. The temple is best known for its central spire, which stands at 70 meters tall, making it one of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. You’ll get an incredible view of the river and surrounding city if you make it to the top, but be prepared—there are a lot of stairs! So, make sure to stretch and warm up before you take on the climb, because it’s a serious workout!

Whether you visit at sunrise, sunset, or any time in between, Wat Arun’s beauty and history are sure to leave you in awe.

Grand Palace ***: Touring the Grand Palace in Bangkok is like stepping into a world of glittering gold and intricate beauty. The palace grounds are expansive, with stunning temples that gleam in the sunlight, adorned with gold leaf, mosaics, and colorful tiles. One of the most famous sights inside is Wat Phra Kaew, home to the Emerald Buddha—a revered statue carved from a single block of jade. The Emerald Buddha has a fascinating history, having traveled from Laos and Chiang Rai before finally finding its home in the Grand Palace, where it’s considered a symbol of Thailand’s monarchy and spirituality.

The palace itself dates back to 1782 and was once the official residence of the Kings of Siam. Walking through the grounds, you’ll be surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens, ornate halls, and pavilions, each representing a piece of Thailand’s rich history and culture.

One tip: plan your visit early in the day! Not only will you beat the heat, but you’ll also avoid the massive crowds of tourists that tend to flood in. Trust me, a cooler, less crowded visit makes all that gold sparkle even brighter!

OUTDOOR MARKETS

Thailand’s outdoor markets, especially in Bangkok, are vibrant, lively hubs that truly capture the spirit of Thai life. These markets aren’t just for shopping—they’re integral to the local culture, serving as bustling meeting spots where people come together to eat, socialize, and unwind. Whether it’s after work with coworkers, reuniting with old friends, a family night out, or even a romantic stroll with a date, these markets offer the perfect setting for any occasion.

Packed with endless street food stalls, handmade crafts, and live music, the energy is contagious. Markets like Chatuchak and Rot Fai are great examples, offering everything from delicious Thai snacks to trendy fashion finds. It’s more than just a place to shop—it’s an experience that immerses you in the heart of Thai daily life, where laughter, food, and good company are always in abundance! Here are the few that I went to.

Asiatique Night Market ***: Asiatique Night Market in Bangkok is like a night market with a twist—it’s a more elevated and polished version of the typical street markets you’ll find around the city. Located right by the Chao Phraya River, Asiatique combines the charm of a traditional night market with the feel of a stylish open-air mall. You’ll find unique fashion, handmade crafts, chic accessories, and quirky home décor that make for perfect gifts. The market is also known for its trendy restaurants and riverside bars, so after a bit of shopping, you can kick back with a drink and enjoy the river views. Plus, with the added bonus of live shows and a ferris wheel, it’s an experience that has something for everyone!

Chatuchak Weekend Market: Chatuchak Market in Bangkok is a must-visit for anyone looking to dive into Thailand’s vibrant shopping culture. Open only on weekends, this sprawling market is one of the largest in the world, so be sure to plan ahead to experience it. With over 15,000 stalls spread across countless alleyways and hallways, Chatuchak feels like a maze—but getting lost is part of the adventure! The market is organized into different sections, each dedicated to specific types of goods from clothing to home décor, antiques, plants, and even pets. There’s also an entire area dedicated to food, where you can indulge in street food classics like pad Thai, coconut ice cream, and fresh fruit smoothies. The variety is mind-blowing—you could spend hours wandering through the labyrinth of stalls, and still feel like there’s more to discover.

The market is a reflection of Bangkok’s bustling energy, offering a taste of everything that makes the city so exciting. Whether you’re on the hunt for something specific or just there to take in the atmosphere, Chatuchak Market is an essential part of the Bangkok experience.

MALLS

Bangkok is a shopper’s paradise, boasting a ton of shopping malls that cater to every taste and budget. From casual department stores to high-end luxury boutiques, the city has something for everyone. One of the most notable areas for shopping is Rama Road, a bustling hub that features an impressive array of malls.

Starting with Siam Paragon, this upscale shopping destination is home to luxury brands, designer boutiques, and gourmet dining options. It’s not just a mall; it’s an experience! Nearby, Siam Center offers a more trendy vibe with a mix of international brands and local designers, making it a perfect spot for fashion enthusiasts. Siam Square is another popular area, known for its youthful energy and eclectic shops, along with plenty of cafés to recharge in between shopping sprees.

Just a short distance away is Gaysorn Village, a luxurious shopping complex that focuses on high-end fashion and lifestyle brands. Its elegant atmosphere makes it a great place to browse for exclusive items. Finally, Central Embassy is another must-visit, featuring a blend of high-end retail, dining options, and even a cinema. The architecture of the mall itself is stunning, making it a visual treat as well.

Whether you’re looking to splurge on luxury goods or hunt for unique local finds, the shopping malls along Rama Road offer endless options and are a significant part of Bangkok’s vibrant retail scene.

Bangkok Gay Nightlife

Bangkok's gay nightlife is as fun and vibrant as it gets, offering a judgment-free zone where everyone is welcome to have a great time. The Silom district is the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene, and it’s known for being inclusive, lively, and full of energy. While I only had time to visit one club, DJ Station, it didn’t disappoint. DJ Station is a multi-level nightclub with an incredible atmosphere—think epic music, packed dance floors, and a mix of locals and travelers all there to enjoy themselves.

Whether you’re dancing under the neon lights or hanging out at the bar with new friends, the vibe is totally carefree and fun. Silom is the perfect place to experience a nightlife scene that’s not only exciting but also deeply inclusive, where everyone, regardless of who they are, can let loose and be themselves. It's truly a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the pulse of Bangkok’s gay nightlife!
