CHIANG MAI ATTRACTIONS
I found myself liking Chiang Mai more than Bangkok because there was always something to do without feeling overwhelming. I loved exploring different streets and night markets without the crowds or dense buildings making it feel claustrophobic. The abundance of temples in the Old City and the many outdoor markets helped me feel more connected to Thai culture.
We stayed at the Rim Resort on the edge of the Old City, which was ideal. We were close to the attractions but also just outside, making it easy to catch a taxi for places farther away. The hotel’s central pool was perfect for cooling off after a day in the heat. They also have a strict "No Durian" rule, which makes sense given its strong smell!
TEMPLES
Wat Sri Suphan / The Silver Temple: Nestled within the vibrant Saturday Night Street Market in Chiang Mai, I stumbled upon one of the city's hidden gems—the Silver Temple (Wat Sri Suphan). At night, the temple transforms into an ethereal sight, illuminated by soft, changing lights that shimmer off the silver walls, casting a magical glow. The detail of the handcrafted silver panels tells stories of history, faith, and culture, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan: Located in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Old City, this stunning showcase of Lanna architecture us one of the most important temples in northern Thailand. The temple's intricate gold-plated buildings gleam in the sunlight, creating a breathtaking sight against the city’s backdrop. During Loy Krathong, the temple becomes even more magical, adorned with vibrant lantern displays that fill the night sky with color and light.
Wat Phan Tao: Unlike the many gold-adorned temples in the city, Wat Phan Tao is made entirely of teak wood, giving it a rustic, timeless charm. The temple is smaller and more intimate, with peaceful gardens and a tranquil pond, often decorated with lanterns during festivals. Located near the famous Wat Chedi Luang, it's a quiet retreat where you can admire the intricate wood carvings and immerse yourself in the calm, spiritual atmosphere.
Wat Chedi Luang: Centrally located in the heart of the Old City, this ancient temple is known for its towering, partially-ruined chedi (stupa), which once stood over 80 meters tall before being damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century. Despite its weathered state, the chedi remains an awe-inspiring sight, surrounded by peaceful grounds and smaller shrines. Wat Chedi Luang is also home to the city pillar and once housed the revered Emerald Buddha, making it a key spiritual site in northern Thailand. The temple’s blend of history, architecture, and serene atmosphere makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Chiang Mai.
Wat Lok Moli: Just outside the Old City’s north gate, this lesser-known temple dates back to the 14th century and boasts a rich history tied to the Mengrai dynasty. The temple’s impressive chedi, one of the tallest in Chiang Mai, stands beside a beautifully adorned wooden viharn (prayer hall) with intricate carvings. Wat Lok Moli’s peaceful gardens, often adorned with colorful flags and lanterns, make it a serene retreat from the busier city temples.

Elephant Parade: If you’ve walked around Chiang Mai, chances are you’ve seen these ornately painted statues of elephants which are products of this organization. Inspired by a three elephant named Mosha due to a landmine injury, they donate 20% of their profits to elephant welfare like Mosha’s prosthetic leg and other conservation projects. In their stores, they sell miniature painted elephants as a souvenir. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a nice display of creatively painted elephant figurines to check out.

SHOWS
Lady Boy Cabaret: Attending the Chiang Mai Cabaret Show is an unforgettable, fun-filled experience that blends glitz, glamour, and a whole lot of sass. This isn't your typical Lady Boy show—there are no sexual acts involved—it's more of a fabulous drag performance, complete with extravagant costumes, dazzling dance numbers, and high-energy lip-syncs. The performers are absolute pros at entertaining the crowd with humor and style, but watch out for some audience participation! If you’re a good-looking guy, you might just find yourself up on stage, but don’t worry—it’s all in lighthearted fun and only adds to the electrifying atmosphere. It's the perfect night out for those seeking a lively, unforgettable performance in Chiang Mai!
