COLOGNE ACTIVITIES
Cologne Cathedral ***: Also called Kölner Dom, this cathedral is a magnificent Gothic masterpiece that dominates the city’s skyline and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The cathedral is not only famous for its awe-inspiring architecture but also for its stunning collection of stained glass windows, which tell biblical stories and enhance the interior's ethereal beauty. As you explore the cathedral, you'll be mesmerized by the sheer number of stained glass windows, each with its own unique artistry. However, you might be surprised to learn that my favorite window isn’t one of the traditional designs. Instead, it’s a pixelated stained glass window that showcases a modern aesthetic. This contemporary design stands out among the historical pieces, offering a striking contrast and reminding visitors that even within such an ancient structure, there is room for innovation and new interpretations of art.
Great St. Martin Church: Dating back to the 13th century, this church (also called Große St. Martin) is distinguished by its impressive tower and striking facade, making it one of the most recognizable churches in Cologne. Its architecture reflects the typical features of the Romanesque style, with sturdy columns, rounded arches, and intricate sculptures that adorn its exterior. Inside, visitors are greeted by a serene atmosphere with beautiful stained glass windows that illuminate the space, creating a peaceful setting for reflection.
4711 Cologne: Cologne is not only famous for its stunning architecture and rich culture, but it’s also the birthplace of cologne itself. The city’s aromatic legacy began in the early 18th century with the creation of Eau de Cologne, a light, citrusy fragrance that became immensely popular throughout Europe. Located near the historic city center, this iconic store allows you to immerse yourself in the world of perfume. You can explore the original formulas and the art of fragrance-making, while the knowledgeable staff shares the captivating story behind Eau de Cologne. The store’s elegant interior and the fragrant atmosphere make it an enchanting experience.
Shop at Hohe Street: If you love to shop, a visit to Hohe Straße in Cologne is an absolute must! This vibrant shopping street is one of the city's most popular retail destinations, lined with a diverse array of stores, boutiques, and cafes. As you stroll along this bustling thoroughfare, you’ll find everything from high-street fashion brands to unique local shops, making it a perfect place to indulge in some retail therapy. Hohe Straße seamlessly connects with Schildergasse, another renowned shopping area, creating a shopper’s paradise.
Cross the Hohenzollernbrücke: Spanning the Rhein River, this striking iron bridge is particularly famous for its tradition of couples inattagch locks to its railings as a pledge of their love. The sight of thousands of colorful padlocks, glinting in the sun, creates a vibrant and romantic atmosphere that draws visitors in. The bridge itself offers stunning views of the Kölner Dom, making it a perfect photo opportunity. As you walk across, you’ll feel the buzz of the city around you, with trains whisking by and the sounds of the river below.
Walk along the Rheinboulevard: The views from this promenade are truly stunning, especially with the iconic Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral) towering across the river. The wide, open steps of the boulevard make it the perfect spot to sit and take in the panoramic sights, with the historic skyline of Cologne as your backdrop.
Schokoladenmuseum Köln: As someone who doesn’t normally visit museums (they tend to feel like I’m back on a school field trip), this chocolate museum was a fun exception. Inside, you get an immersive journey through the history of chocolate, from the ancient Aztec cocoa rituals to modern-day production. The best part, though, is the tasting opportunities—you get to sample chocolate at various stages of its creation, which was definitely a highlight for me!
One of the coolest features is that you can even customize your own chocolate bar. You pick your favorite ingredients, and they make it fresh right in front of you. It’s a fun, interactive experience that adds a personal touch to your visit.
