FRANKFURT EATERIES

During my short stay in Frankfurt, I spent most of my time exploring the local food scene in the Sachsenhausen neighborhood, which quickly became my go-to spot for authentic cuisine. This charming, old-world district is nestled just south of the Main River, known for its narrow cobblestone streets, traditional taverns, and a relaxed, down-to-earth vibe.

Sachsenhausen is particularly famous for its Apfelwein (apple wine), the region's beloved drink that pairs perfectly with hearty local dishes. Whether it was Frankfurter sausages, Grüne Soße (green sauce), or Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), the food here was simple yet flavorful, with a strong focus on comfort and tradition. The taverns in this neighborhood offer a cozy, communal atmosphere, making it a great place to savor local flavors and connect with the friendly locals.

Gaststätte Atschel: *** They had my favorite homemade Apfelwein. Their pork knuckle was also fantastic! A true local’s joint, try to make reservations if possible.

Ebbelwoi Unser: Another local pub with a friendly, neighborhood vibe. They had fantastic pork schnitzel that was crispy on the outside, juicy and flavorful on the inside without tasting greasy. Their green dipping sauce was also yummy!

Apfelwein Dax: Yet another, local pub with a larger dining space. Their curry wurst with fries was so delicious.

Le Petit Cafe: Just as the name sounds, this is a small cafe shop with only a few tables that are perfect for intimate meetings or catch-ups with friends. They have a delicious carrot cake that I inhaled!

Hoppenworth & Ploch Altstadt Café: The perfect cafe in the center of Römerberg. They have a small dining area with very few tables but they have outside dining as well. You can order right at their take-away window. Their freshly brewed coffee paired perfectly with their crumbly and subtle German Chocolate Cake.
