KOH SAMUI THINGS TO DO

Our five days in Koh Samui marked the conclusion of our journey, and relaxation was our priority during this time. Because of that, we rarely ventured beyond the comforts of our resort, Vana Belle—an establishment I wholeheartedly recommend and plan to revisit on future trips to the island. Unfortunately, a significant storm had just swept through the area the day before our arrival, leading the hotel concierge to advise against water excursions due to poor visibility and experience altogether. Nevertheless, we discovered plenty of alternative activities on the island, which only fueled our desire to return and experience snorkeling around Koh Samui on our next visit.

Muay Thai Tournament: Watching a Muay Thai match at Samui International Muay Thai Stadium was an unforgettable experience, combining both tourism and local culture in an authentic way. I loved how the sport pays tribute to its deep history through the ritualistic and unique pre-fight dances, which are so gentle and respectful. This ceremonial tradition stands in stark contrast to the intense, aggressive nature of the fight itself, creating a fascinating juxtaposition. It was a thrilling way to immerse myself in Thailand’s cultural heritage while witnessing the power and discipline of this martial art firsthand.

Wat Phra Yai aka Big Buddha Temple: Perched on a small island just off the northern coast, it’s home to a massive 12-meter golden Buddha statue that can be seen from afar. The temple’s serene atmosphere invites visitors to take in panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and nearby islands.

Wat Plai Laem: Wat Plai Laem is a vibrant and visually striking temple on Koh Samui, offering a unique blend of traditional and contemporary Thai-Buddhist art. The temple is most famous for its massive, 18-arm statue of the goddess Guanyin, symbolizing compassion and mercy, and a large white Buddha statue sitting serenely nearby. Surrounded by a peaceful lake, where you can feed the fish for good karma, Wat Plai Laem offers a tranquil and reflective atmosphere.

Chedi Wat Khao Hua Chuk: This place is a hidden gem perched on a hill, offering stunning panoramic views of the island. The golden pagoda at the top adds a touch of spiritual beauty, and the peaceful setting makes it a perfect spot for reflection. What makes this temple extra special is its proximity to the airport—making it an excellent place for plane spotting. You can watch planes take off and land while enjoying the breathtaking views of Chaweng Lake and the coastline below.

Wat Ratchathamaram ***: This temple is my absolute favorite temple I saw in Thailand. Its distinctive red sandstone architecture sets it apart from other temples in the country. The intricate carvings on the temple walls depict Buddhist stories and local folklore, adding to its artistic and cultural charm. Located near the coast, the temple offers a peaceful ambiance, with ocean views complementing its serene atmosphere. Wat Ratchathammaram’s stunning design and tranquil location make it a must-see for those seeking both beauty and spiritual connection on Koh Samui.

Wat Kunaram: Wat Khunaram is one of Koh Samui’s most fascinating temples, best known for housing the mummified body of a revered monk, Luang Pho Daeng, who passed away in 1973 while meditating. His body, remarkably preserved in a meditative position, is displayed in a glass case as a symbol of the Buddhist belief in life, death, and rebirth. This temple offers a unique cultural and spiritual experience, drawing visitors to reflect on the monk's serene state and the teachings of impermanence. This temple is both humbling and inspiring, offering a deeper insight into Thailand’s Buddhist traditions.

Central Samui: This Mall is a modern shopping destination on Koh Samui that combines retail, dining, and entertainment in one convenient location. With a range of stores offering everything from fashion and electronics to souvenirs, it’s a great place to pick up both essentials and unique finds. The mall also has a variety of restaurants and cafés, serving local and international cuisine, making it a perfect spot to take a break from sightseeing. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and its air-conditioned spaces offer a comfortable retreat from the island’s heat.

Fisherman’s Village Night Market: Even though it’s smaller than the standard night markets found in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, it offers the same fun vibe and inviting ambiance. The market is lined with colorful stalls featuring local handicrafts, souvenirs, and clothing, alongside an array of delicious street food options. As you stroll through the market, you can enjoy the sounds of live music and the warm atmosphere created by both locals and visitors.

Chaweng Night Market: This market is a bustling shopping destination located conveniently near Central Samui Mall, making it an easy stop for visitors. This vibrant market is a great place to explore a variety of local goods, from clothing and accessories to handmade crafts and souvenirs. The lively atmosphere, filled with the sounds of vendors and shoppers, creates a fun and energetic experience.

Pamper yourself in a spa: Koh Samui was all about relaxing, so a spa treatment (or two) was something I needed by this point in our itinerary. Zense Spa was a great spa with many different spa services. Their deep tissue massage and facials were my favorite. My skin felt so rejuvenated after being blasted for days with the Thai sun and heat! They also offer transportation to and from your hotel (within a certain distance) so that your relaxation starts before you even step foot in the spa!

Go to a beach: Because our resort already had beachfront space, we didn’t get the chance to check out the other beaches on the island. Vana Belle is on a more private section of Chaweng Beach so you get the pristine and gentle waves, without the overwhelming crowds.
